On September 16, three Vatican Dicasteries - Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue - published the document The Path of Hope: A Note on the 60th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate. Leo XIV. approved the text on June 22.
Religions may become expressions of God's will
§58 contains perhaps the document’s most troubling claim: The “religions are called to transform the world and society so that they may become fraternal expressions of God’s will”.
Vatican II “Changed” Church’s understanding
The document admits in §1 that Vatican II’ declaration Nostra Aetate “marked a profound change in the Church’s understanding and expression of her relationship with followers of other religions”.
“Sacred” texts of the false religions
§32 claims that there is a universal criterion of discernment that can be found in the “sacred texts” of the various religions: namely, whether one welcomes or rejects the wounded person lying by the roadside.
Pagans as “travelling companions” to truth
§ 33 quotes Pope Leo XIV from October 2025, that “the followers of other religions” are “travelling companions on the path of truth”.
Catholics and pagans in shared search for truth
According to §50, the goal of dialogue is “encounter” in “a shared search for truth”:“Its aim is mutual understanding and the discovery of what is right and authentic for all.”
Interreligious dialogue as a “theological locus”
§ 51 considers the interreligious dialogue “a theological locus where the Holy Spirit wishes to be heard through the encounter with the other”.
Proselytism “no longer” makes sense
§54 calls for “a genuine shift in mindset”, adding that “the view that proselytism is the only way to engage with the other no longer makes sense in a world that increasingly resembles an interconnected and constantly evolving global village.”
The closing formulation is that the Holy Spirit is at work within the religions of peoples and that we are sustained by “the spiritual treasure of religious traditions”.
